sorry but im confuce what is the difference between OVA and a normal episode?? is an ova a shorter version of the anime o what??? HELP!!

is an ova a shorter version of the anime o what??? HELP!! couse i keep seeing animes that say ova and are only 3 of them so im just wondering!

meaning is has no connection to the original story line(that's if it is part of an anime) like the Kuro OVA that had no relevence to the original story.
