PART 4:

"Samantha!" A voice boomed. I sighed and rolled over. What did Dex want now? A foot massage? siguiente thing tu know he'd be asking me to wipe his own culo for him. I thought to myself. "SAMANTHA! NOW!" I got to my feet as quickly as my sore legs would allow and hurried to the front room. "Yes?" I asked, with an annoyed edge to my voice. His mouth was open, about to yell again. He closed it for a moment and narrowed his eyes at me. "Haven't I reminded tu once o twice not to sass your superiors?" He asked. His voice was calm, but his eyes were outraged. I hardly contained the urge too roll my eyes. "I'm sorry, let me start over." I smiled pleasantly and exited the room. I took slow deliberate steps re entering and stopped a few feet in front of him. "Is there anything I can do for you, Dex?" I asked with a false sugary sweet tone. Amusement replaced the outrage and a twisted smile rearranged his features. "Yes, actually. I'm glad tu asked. Go and check on Toren. He's just nearly lost a fight and I need to know if he's going to die o be prepared for tomorrow's tournament. reportar back to me at once." I stifled the urge to slap him. Toren had already been in nearly 12 battles this month. He'd never survive a tournament! And if he didn't compete, they'd kill him just like Jan last mes and Kyle the mes before that. I'd only had two best friends my whole life. Hazel, who was the very best memory of my old life, and Toren. My only companion here. Almost all the other children here had been hardened por this way of life. They'd grown cold and lost hope. Jan, Toren, Lucy, and I were the only ones who weren't tainted with misery and loss. Still, we were miserable, but we refused to give up our memories of the past. We still had hope of the possibility of escape. If there had been a leader of our little group, it would have been Jan. She was the one who reassured and kept us together. She was strong and wise beyond her years. WAS. But being strong had a downfall. She was a crowd favorito! when it came to battles. After 23 kills, Dex decided to enter her in a tournament. But after being worked so hard, she was tired. Eliminating 9 out of the 15 competitors, Jan was in the highest rank. She made it to the final round easily. She was up against the only standing competitor, a new crowd favorite, Fin. His score was 4 out of 15. Jan would have beaten him, too, if she weren't so tired. She lunged for him, carelessly forgetting to cover her right side. I had closed my eyes then, but it was obvious it was over for Jan. She would never again encourage us to stay hopeful. She would never escape this place and go on to become a world famous surgeon. She would never breathe the fresh, untainted por misery, outside air again. When Jan left this world, it hit us hard. The only thing that kept us going was knowing that she would never have to kill another innocent again, for that was what she hated most. She had always tried to make it as less painful for the unfortunate as possible. I knocked on the door to Toren's room and took a step back. The door shuddered uneasily, as if it couldn't stand much longer. Well, at least he had a door. Most of us didn't. Crowd favoritos were dado the nicer rooms. "Who is it?" Toren's familiar voice rang out. It sounded uneasy. "Sam. Can I come in?" Followed por a few creaks in the floor boards, the door opened. He was already walking back to his cama when I came in quietly and shut the door behind me. He lay nearly hanging off the bed, with a almohada over his face. "Did Dex send you?" His voice was muffled por cotton. "Yeah. He wants to know if you're ready for tomorrow.." He sighed heavily and sat up. "Do I have any other choice?" I stared into his tortured eyes for a moment before coming to sit beside him. "Not unless tu want to die." I took his hands in an effort to comfort him. He wrapped one of his arms around me and used the other to bring my head to rest on his warm shoulder. Gently stroking my hair, he whispered, "I'm scared, Sam." I squeezed both his hands in mine and pulled back enough to face him. "Don't be. You're going to be fine." He rolled his eyes and tousled his hair nervously. "If tu say so." We sat in silence for a moment, the only sound was my accelerated corazón beat and his unsteady breathing. "..Sam?" He asked, breaking the silence. I hesitated. "Yeah?" His whole body seemed to sag in response. "What if i'm not fine?"
