Now, growing up, I was never aware of The Black Cauldron. It was only when I got the Once Upon A halloween DVD in 2004 that I became aware of it as there is a clip from the movie on there. But I was definitely intrigued about the movie. So I got the oro Collection DVD, watched it and was blown away. It's such an underrated classic with great characters and stunning animation. I wish the movie had been a big hit, but I do understand why it flopped at the Box Office. It is a very dark movie. But it's definitely one of my personal favorites. I adore the animación in this movie. Taran is one of my favorito! leads in a disney feature. And Gurgi is just the sweetest, funny little creature. The Horned King had BIG potential to be a really scary villain, but I think disney blew it with him. Yes, he's terrifying to look at, but he never really does that much, unlike queen Grimhilde o Ursula. But despite it's flaws, The Black Cauldron is a charming disney movie. If tu haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend tu go watch it.
Image #1: Taran.
Two cel set-up applied to a matching watercolor background of the house.
Quote: Taran: But I'm not afraid... OUCH!
Number of frames: 60 frames.
Description of the sequence: Taran reaching his hand out in protest, only to touch the boiling pot, burning his finger.
PrueFever's comment: I amor the animación here as Taran burn himself on the pot. The way he shakes his hand after. It kinda looks like he's telling someone off.
Image #2: Taran.
Single cel set-up applied to a matching watercolor background of the forest.
Quote: Taran: You.
Number of frames: 40 frames.
Description of the sequence: Taran gets the manzana, apple back from Gurgi and is stunned that the little creature took a bite of it, before handing it back.
PrueFever's comment: I amor the fact that tu can clearly see this is cel-animation. Just look at the lines around Taran's face, hair and fingers. Also, the disney colorist who painted the cels made a mistake in one frame. Look at the white inside the apple. In one frame, it turns red.
Image #3: Taran.
Single cel set-up applied to a matching watercolor background of the forest.
Quote: Taran: Ohh no!.
Number of frames: 58 frames.
Description of the sequence: Taran gets annoyed with himself, when he discovers that Hen Wen has run off. He tosses the stick in the water in frustration.
PrueFever's comment: Another sequence I really amor with Taran. In some of the first frames, when he has closed his eyes, he looks like he could be singing. One thing I really amor about the animación of Taran, is that he has a perfect nose. Unlike Jim Hawkins.
Image #4 & #5: Taran & Orddu.
Two cel set-up applied to a matching watercolor background of the house.
Quote: Taran: Alright! I know what tu want. Orddu: Yees?
Number of frames: 130 frames.
Description of the sequence: Taran decides to offer the witches his sword.
PrueFever's comment: I have always loved the animación of Taran in this sequence, but notice in the segundo gif, how his skin changes color to a darker shade.
