2) It doesn't create a new character
Sometimes I hate school so frigging much. Actually, I wouldn’t mind it so much, except for no one really likes me. See, I’m real social. So when the only people I have to talk to is a budding juvenile delinquent, a geek with freckles and braces, a hyper redheaded girl, and a sarcastic blond (Quin can get really sarcastic sometimes), tu can understand why I feel like that.
Don’t get me wrong. They’re great friends, and I’m really glad that they like me. I just get a little tired of them sometimes. Especially since Zoë’s the only girl. I mean, if I’m tired of her, but I want to talk about girl stuff, then too bad. I just had to suck it up.
That’s why I was so glad when Tonia emailed me Saturday. I was surfing the web for leather backpacks when a pop-up appeared in the right bottom-hand corner. I read it.

I checked my emails. There was the one from Tonia:
Tonya_H: Hiya Lisa! Whats up?
I sent her one back:
Leesa1212: Nothing much. Whats up 4 u?
Tonya_H: yay! ur online! nothing going on 4 me either. mostly just settling in.
Leesa1212:u met any of ur neighbors?
Tonya_H: not yet. im going 2 as soon as possible. hola i gotta go now. moms calling me. talk 2 ya l8er?
Leesa1212: sure. bye.
Tonya_H: bye. see ya @ school.
I logged off and shut down the computer, smiling. I had made a new friend.
I saw her in school the siguiente día across from me in the hall. I waved to her, and she came over to me.
“Guess who one of our neighbors is?” she asked excitedly.
“Who?” I asked. From her tone of voice, I was guessing it was either the president o the hottest guy in the universe.
“Ash!” she said.
So not the president, and definitely not the hottest guy in the universe. I mean, Ash is sort of cute, in a freckly, wire-mouth way, but he’s not hot at all.
“So?” I asked.
“So he’s totally adorable!”
“Do tu want me to ask him if he likes you?”
“Would he tell you?”
I nodded. “Sure. He’s practically my brother. Besides, nothing bothers him. He doesn’t give a shit about that stuff.”
Tonia stared at me.
“What?” I asked.
“You dicho the S-word,” she dicho incredulously.
“Shit?” I asked.
She nodded.
“If tu think that’s bad, wait till tu see Ryker mad.”
“Why? What does he say?” Tonia asked.
“Depends. F-word. He’s dicho that. And the M-word.”
“What’s the M-word?” Tonia asked.
I laughed incredulously. “You don’t know what the M-word is?”
She shook her head.
I laughed again. “You need to hang out with us more. tu have a lot to learn.” I nodded behind her. “There’s Ash. Want me to go ask him if he likes you?”
She blushed a little and nodded. “Sure. Um…I’ll catch tu later, alright. I need to go to my siguiente class.”
“You just don’t want to be here when I ask him,” I accused teasingly.
She blushed more. “Shut up,” she said, giggling. “I’m going to math.” Tonia hurried down the hall and through a door near the bathrooms.
“Hey, Ash!” I called. He turned, then grinned when he saw who it was.
“Hey, Lis. What’s up?”
“Do tu like Tonia? ‘Cause she thinks you’re sexy.” Okay, so that wasn’t exactly what Tonia had said, but it sounded más romantic.
He stared at me. “She thinks I’m what?”
“Cute. She thinks you’re cute.”
He grinned again. “Really?”
I nodded enthusiastically.
“Yes!” He swept me up in a hug. “That’s awesome!”
“So…you like her?” I asked, struggling to free myself from his grip.
He released me. “Hell, yeah! She’s hot!”
“You gonna ask her out?” I asked. My ribs hurt from his hug.
He nodded. I thought he was going to shake his head right off of his shoulders.
“Okay, well, don’t give yourself whiplash with enthusiasm,” I said, smiling.
He smiled back at me and ran off down the hall.
“I’m gonna go tell Zoë!” I shouted after me. He flashed me a thumbs up.
I found Zoë in the girl’s bathroom washing her hands with flowery-smelling liquid soap.
“Zo-Mo,” I said.
Ash made up that nickname for her a few years ago, and now we all call her that. Ash loves coming up with nicknames. Actually, everyone called Quin Quinton until fourth grade, when Ash decided that Quinton was too stuffy sounding.
Zoë turned and pulled down a paper towel. “Hi, Lisa.”
“Guess what?” I asked.
“What?” She was smiling excitedly.
“Ash is gonna ask Tonia out!”
The smile fell off her face. “Oh. Okay. Good for Tonia,” she said, a bit bitterly.
“What? Don’t tu like her?” I asked.
Zoë nodded. “It’s not that. It’s just…” she trailed off, then started up again: “nothing. It’s nothing.” She swung open the door and slipped out.
I noticed that there had been tears in her pool-blue eyes.
