Awww Oh, Snap! Quiz Retro Silly Whoa Yum
At the risk of being controversial, we think that Scar gets a pretty lousy rap these days. Sure, he’s a bit of a naughty kitty, but under his cold, tough exterior is an intelligent feline full of potential! He may make a few terrible life decisions, and while we may disagree with most of them, it’s important to realize that everything happens for a reason.
Depositions are simply a part of history. One fearless leader rises forward with a different point of view than that of the current ruler. Here in the civilized world, we have an exhausting list of political parties, differing ideas, and strong opinions on how things should be run; why should the animal kingdom be any different?
And so, perhaps it’s not surprisingly that Scar intends to to overthrow Mufasa’s rule as king. As the younger brother, there must have been a large amount of emotional duress attached with seeing your sibling living high above the others—including yourself. He sees a deluge of social issues plaguing the Pride Lands that Mufasa doesn’t seem to understand. (And why should he? He’s the lion king after all — not the hyena king.)
Scar is a friend of the hyenas — perhaps one of the only ones to understand their struggle and express a desire to create certain equality within the Pride Lands. With the hyenas and lions working together, anything could have been possible.
Theoretically speaking, with the hyenas on team Pride Lands, the boundaries of the kingdom could extend beyond the shadowy place, allowing for even greater expansion of the empire. Additionally, an increased amount of able-bodied animals would allow for even greater hunting opportunities. More food and more land for everyone? That’s something we can get behind.
This notion is even alluded to in the film. As Scar triumphantly declares as he takes the throne: “We shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era… in which lion and hyena come together, in a great and glorious future!” See? Scar is full of optimism and hope for prosperity for all (…except Mufasa).
Imagine: A world where Scar really just wanted everyone to be happy.
What do you think of our defense of Scar? Could things have gone differently in the Pride Lands? Tell us in the comments!
