Can you believe that this month marks the 20th anniversary of The Lion King? Since its release in the Summer of 1994, The Lion King has touched children and adults of all ages and has gone down as one of the most critically acclaimed animated films of all time.
To celebrate, we dug into the archives at Walt Disney Animation Studios and found several pieces of art that we are beyond excited to share.

In animation, one of the most important elements of the pre-production process is to work with both the story team and character artists to design the physical and emotional characteristics of each characters. It all starts with an idea and a blank piece of paper. Character development is at the core of the animation process, and allows the filmmakers to define exactly who each character is.
These clean-up model sheets are produced after months of research, rough drafts, and approvals from key stakeholders of the film. In each piece, a single character is drawn with different facial expressions in several poses to give the animators a sense of how to draw the character from any angle. Enjoy, and Hakuna Matata!
