Travel is a perk of the job for the smouldering estrella of the Borgias. During filming in Budapest, he soaked up the city’s rich culture. “I went to a lot of museums. It’s a very lively city and things are changing so quickly”.

“I don’t get recognised much. I guess because my look is so different. I don’t have the túnica, albornoz and the leather pants.”

Their on-screen encounters are always tempestuous, but François considers the cast - including British actor Jeremy Irons - his segundo family. “We all live in the same neighbourhood in Budapest and we eat together almost every night.”

I liked Juan. He was one of the más intriguing characters in the show. Although he did bring about a lot of his own troubles I did feel sorry for him in the end. I was watching the first episode and thought it was interesting when the brothers arrived at their mother’s inicial Cesare joined his family at the mesa, tabla whereas Juan remained at a distance, as if maybe he felt he didn’t belong.

Then when he had to kill Djem, he really didn’t want to do it. He was his friend. I think this is where Juan’s fate was sealed. And it was to help his father. It seemed that once Juan left Rome he did...
