’s season two premiere, he was what actor Sean Teale called “Robin Hood in the woods.” As far as we knew, he was Francis’ cousin and a perfectly nice guy. Cut to halfway through the season, and he and Francis are no longer on good terms, and Condé’s biggest concern has become the well-being of the beautiful Queen Mary.
But when Condé’s brother Antoine returns in tonight’s episode—and accuses Bash of murdering one of his family members—things start to get much more political, especially considering that both Condé’s and Francis’ families are rightful heirs to the throne.
We chatted with Teale about Condé’s love of Mary, his dedication to his family, and more.
Don’t expect Condé and Francis to become friends anytime soon. ”They’re not hanging out much, let’s say,” Teale said with a laugh. Mary aside, this week, things become about the accusations that Antoine makes. “This becomes about bloodlines, this becomes about family and history and what this show’s also about outside of love relationships, which is politics and the reigning of kingdoms and power, which Antoine is very aware of,” Teale said.
Condé’s a good guy, but there are no guarantees. “He is incredibly torn,” Teale said, speaking to Condé’s loyalty to those at French Court and his loyalty to his family. “He’s been incredibly loyal in the face of adversity and sort of put himself in the firing line very deliberately, not to prove his loyalty but because that’s the person that he is. He’s a man of the people even though he comes from power and has his own province,” Teale said.
“But at the same time, you have to understand in this time period, this is a family affair and his brother’s there to remind him to do your job, to remember who you are, who you’re fighting for, and [Antoine’s] not as trusting or trustworthy.”
The love triangle isn’t over yet. As Teale put it, “You can’t fight each other with sticks and expect it to end there.” And yet, if Francis were to justify his actions to Condé, he’d likely lose the throne. “The problem is, Condé’s anger toward Francis is entirely justified because he’s not allowed to know why [Francis] did all the things that he’s done. And the reason he can’t find that out is, if he finds out that Francis committed regicide, that’s his family done and the Bourbons will sweep in.”
But Condé’s animosity toward Francis isn’t solely about his rule as a Catholic king. But rather, it has a lot to do with Mary. “He hasn’t been a good husband to Mary, which means a huge thing to [Condé], to have this beautiful woman and to not truly be there for her,” Teale said. “There’s that awkwardness, and [Condé’s] love for Mary is evident. He cares for her as a human being and he would do anything for her which includes not ever being with her.”
Long story short, the love triangle “heats up,” according to Teale.
He and Lola might stand a fighting chance. Condé is no stranger to being paired with new women, and last week, Mary asked Lola to give him a chance. And according to Teale, they might last. “They’re interesting,” he said. “He’s intrigued by her, and I’m not going to say they do not act upon that. Condé and Lola isn’t going to get shut down out of the blue. There’s a need to pursue that for all their sakes. And they get along, actually.”
Condé might crack a smile (hopefully). Thanks to his new relationship with Lola and the return of his brother, Teale is hopeful that he’ll get to play more of Condé’s lighter side. “Quite often, Condé’s put in situations that are very grave, so [he and Lola] get to joke around with each other which is great. But you could always do with more [of that], where you see the lighter side of him, the warmer side of him where it’s not about getting business done and about saving lives and it’s just about enjoying the person opposite and that flirty sort of potentially cheeky side of Condé that has always been there just not always been shown.”
