How can i approach a guy i like but dont know?

heres the situation, i like this guy who sits across from me a mesa, tabla away and i really like him only he dosent know me at all! I like him because he kinda seems down to earth and nice unlike most guys in the school. he is a grade older than me and i have no idea how to talk to him because i am deathly shy and akward and im not sure if he has a girlfriend o not because he stood her up at homecoming and eversince it seems like they avoid each other after that but idk. anyway i really like him and we both are twins so thats cool

i like him from afar from what ive seen of him we know each ohters names but we have never really talked about anything other than him asking if i knew how to do that math problem (thats the class we have together) any way from what ive seen of him he seems like the kind of guy i like
