Pretty Little Liars S5.11  Review – ‘No One Here Can Love or Understand Me’
I have to be honest, I did not like this episode. I’m struggling to find one moment of guilty pleasure goodness let alone great storytelling. Situations in Rosewood have always been hard to believe, but this week, it seemed as if there was not enough alcohol in Caleb’s cabin to make me believe.
Melissa finally faces Spencer and admits the truth. Well, not really faces. She records a confession that she buried Bethenny alive, thinking she was burying Alison who Melissa believed Spencer killed.
I used to think Mr. Hastings was the weakest link in the family, but Melissa may take the cake. What intelligent, reasonable person, let alone one raised by two lawyers and who has graduated from law school herself, records a murder confession?!?
I can’t wait to see what ‘A’ does with that. Good thing Melissa fled to England. You know that country that never allies itself with the United States and can’t possibly extradite her back for murder trial.
When Hanna discovers Caleb’s drinking again, she turns to Spencer for help and the girls decide a double date may cure what ails him. Despite the bromance hug, all Toby gets Caleb to admit is that it was his time in Ravenswood that’s driving him to the bottle.
Caleb storms off and Toby worries he made things worse. Maybe Toby did because when Hanna confronts Caleb at the cabin again, this time he tells the truth. I’d like to tell you I understood this truth, but I have no idea. Something about Miranda, fireflies, spirits and curses. Oh, and they tied in the Ouija board to help promote a new movie coming out in October. Hanna tells Caleb he did keep his promise to Miranda, who I guess is dead, but I doubt Caleb believes it and the fireflies outside the cabin window seem to suggest that Miranda doesn’t either and she’s haunting him. Or maybe she does and fireflies were a sign she was happy with him. I don’t know but I hope this is the end of the
Does anyone else think the real curse was put on Toby? Between this Ravenswood thing and that disaster with his mother’s suicide/murder, I’m beginning to think he’s destined to be tied to plots that are boring. At least he’s pretty and his make-out sessions with Spencer are steamy.
It’s not so much that Mona & Mike or Emily & Paige have relationship problems as it is that I don’t care about their relationships.
Paige is great for Emily and while I find them boring, I wont mind if they get back together. Emily trying to win her back after realizing choosing Alison over Page was a mistake, doesn’t interest me. Paige going on a date with a generic pretty blonde, who could be mistaken for Alison if you squint, doesn’t interest me.
Mona wonders if Mike really likes her, but I don’t care. I also don’t care much that the Montgomery family is suspicious of their “love” or that Mike is one of the few decent boyfriends in town. What does interest me in the Mike & Mona fairytale is Mr. Montgomery knows that Mona
but thinks that keeping an eye on Mona & Mike is an appropriate response to their dating. I know Aria was dating her adult teacher but remember when Mr. Montgomery wanted to call the cops on Ezra and wouldn’t let Aria eat at the only vegan restaurant in town because Ezra was already dining there. I’m no Ezra fan, but I cry sexist double standards. He’s also pretty calm about the fact that Ella couldn’t show up for family night and Mona could conveniently take her place. Mona who
. Did anyone call Ella to be sure that she’s still, you know, alive?!?
Not to mention, there’s a theater in Rosewood that not only plays old movies but men wear suits and fedoras to sit through them! I can suspend disbelief about a lot, but that’s asking too much.
The Liars are foiled in their attempt to set themselves free of Alison by telling the cops the truth when ‘A’ shows them a picture of Ali dressed up in that candy striper outfit visiting Hanna. Why the Liars think that pictures proves anything about what they knew when is a bit unclear, but the photo scares them into keeping their mouths shut. Well, expect for Spencer and Emily who decide to consume comfort food in the form of whipped cream, which is not so much a food as a topping. Spencer should know that.
With Spencer busy with the Melissa drama and Aria being, well, Aria, Emily and Hanna are the first to realize that maybe ‘A’ is a lot closer than they think. Emily wonders about the timing of Ali’s identifying the kidnapper. Hanna reminds the group that ‘A’ wouldn’t let Alison leave town until now when Ali needs to the most. Emily seeks out Ezra and asks him to look into the picture of Ali with a man at the ATM who turns out to be Cyrus. When Emily goes to Aria and Spencer with the photo, Spencer shows them Melissa’s confession and points out the obvious. Bethenny, who had no connection to Rosewood or the Liars, being on Hastings property dressed in the same outfit as Ali had to be planned. Who would benefit most from that?
They don’t want to believe it, but the Liars are coming to the conclusion that Alison and ‘A’ are one and the same.
Rosewood PD hasn’t caught up yet. They may not believe Alison was kidnapped, but that’s all they seem to know and Tanner’s still skulking around town, questioning minors without an adult present and accusing the Liars of killing Bethenny (or knowing who did). Maybe next week?
The group brainstorming scenes are pretty much the best in the episode (sorry Spoby and Haleb) and one of the few storylines that felt at all plausible. Well, maybe not plausible, but it was enjoyable!
Were you surprised that Melissa confessed? Does anyone understand Caleb’s Ravenswood drama? Are the Liars right, is Ali ‘A’? Will next week’s #FatalFinale give us any answers? Head over to the forum and let us know what you think!
