Give me a reason why Jacob did lie to Edward that Bella is not there with him o whatever he said?

actually what happened was edward asked jacob over the phone about charlie and jacob dicho he was at a funeral. so edward assumed it was bellas funeral not henry clearwaters. then edward went to italy.
