"You need to see it, but it doesn’t really live up to expectation. It betrayed the viewers in the thing we felt was most important to the show: the reveal. It felt so off-handed and I hated that they revealed it, solved Arthur’s issues with magic and killed Arthur all in the space of 1 hr.
This show could have done so much better, and at the end it feels like Merlin did fail no matter what tacked on line the Dragon spouted at the end. The show just completely forgot what its been setting up for the last five years and… it is such a disappointment.
Even as a Gwen fan her becoming Queen in her own right did not feel remotely satisfying because just from the look in her eyes was so… dead. Guinevere looked like she would never smile again, and for a woman who always had she kindest and brightest of smiles, that is more than bittersweet. It is just bleak.
You’d think as a lover of the legends I would like this. But I don’t. In the past, Guinevere losing Arthur and being forced to live a bleak existence in a nunnery out of her guilt for having hurt him was an atonement for her sins. This Guinevere deserved a fairer outcome.
Hell, Merlin deserved some fruit from his labours.
This show wasn’t aimed at me. I liked it because it was a family show, a show aimed at children. But it forgot it was that and the finale is just proof of how much the show lost its way.
It’s treatment of its concept and character was ultimately an epic failure. It makes me feel silly that I ever thought this show as good as I once did."
Merlin's actions in this episode didn't make any sense: he had known for years that Mordred was meant to kill Arthur, and still when he showed up at the battle being all badass he didn't think about taking care of Mordred first?! And in the end, he called the Dragon only when Arthur was basically already dead?! Merlin seemed veeery dumb for most of this episode.
The deaths were also pretty lame, and I'm not saying it just because basically all my favourite characters died (sigh). First, Mordred, which was expected okay, but he didn't even say a word in this episode (I think)! Then, GWAINE. WHY, WHY Gwaine?! And in such an inglorious way too! :( Then Morgana. I was so looking forward to an epic Mergana confrontation, and instead she died in about 30 seconds. Seriously? Arthur's death was heartbreaking and well done, nothing to say about that, even if I hoped until the last second that he would live somehow. :(
So yeah, not completely bad, but surely nothing special either. Sigh.
they killed Arthur and Gwaine. Enough said.
I think people are saying episode bad mostly because of Arthur's death. Yeah, the time between the reveal and death was short but hell that's life! Sometimes you keep things inside you too long and before you even notice it's too late. Merlin seriously thought that Arthur would die so he had to open his heart to him and reveal his magic before it's too late. And sadly their time together after that was short, but beautiful.
One thing I seriously miss: someone telling us that magic won't be outlawed anymore in Camelot! And the modern day ending was a bit weird.. But just think about it as a metaphor and it kind of makes sense.
Loved it for all the bromance moments, for the fact that we are finally shown the true love and devotion Merlin has for Arthur (he is willing to spend his eternity waiting for his return), and because their friendship was more powerful than ever. Arthur thanked Merlin for everything he's done for him and Camelot, Merlin revealed, after all this time, his secret.
But I hated it because of the deaths of Arthur and Gwaine. It was heartbreaking. I cried my eyes out. And on Christmas day!! I wish they didn't have to die, but I guess this makes the end darker and more dramatic and Emrys' fate and sacrifice even more tragic.
Great episode, but it's very unfortunate that it's going to be the last one. I hope the producers are going to change their minds and give us another season... or two.. or three :)) ohh, i just want Merlin and Arthur and their adventures back :((
