Seriously, everything was happening so fast he could barely think straight. Even if he had broken out, the health center would have been evacuated and shut down, and I don't remember Shadow having any medical training. The people would also keep shooting until Maria was dead anyways. I'm sorry, am I too cynical? I'm merely pointing out the facts, and even if she was alive today, she would be in her 60's, since she was 12 when she died.
