Here is my problem with the idea that Katherine is indifferent to Damon; tu (used as a generalization) might be able to say that Katherine plays games with him just because she likes his reactions and lusts after him because she can’t have him, but if tu compare her relationships with Mason/Stefan to hers with Damon, tu can see obvious differences – ones that say más about what Kat’s feeling.
Because SK and DK are compared to death, I’ll start with Mason.
Like her relationship with Damon, Katherine doesn’t (well, can’t) compel Mason, so his amor for her seems legitimate. However, Katherine is just using him/their relationship to prepare for the sacrifice. (With Damon, there is no clear reason to use him, so…that’s out of the question. The most she could have used him for was sex…and I wouldn’t blame her.) When Damon tells Katherine that Mason is dead, Katherine is miffed. And, that’s not an exaggeration either, because she comes right back with Plans B, C, and D. She didn’t really care, IMO. Whereas, with Damon, the idea of him dying has Katherine looking shocked, trying to explain herself to him, and basically asking for a goodbye.
And, before anyone points out the obvious fact that Katherine was shocked at how Damon was going to die, the first thing she did when she told him Klaus basically told him he was done for anyhow was point out the bite on his arm. She must have assumed there was that possibility, and I really don’t think that accounts for her en general, general behavior in that scene.
There is a tremendous difference, IMO, from her reaction to Mason to her reaction to Damon. Mason was clearly a manipulative-only relationship, whereas Damon’s relationship with her is muddled with questions, hence the speculation from quite a few of us.
With Stefan, I still say that her claim to amor him feels immensely absurd. She compels him to continue on, to remain the way they are in the moment he’s infatuated with her (this is around the point where I wish we had más mythology on manipulation) and never shows him one iota of her darker side – that we know of. This would be like Stefan compelling Elena, and never telling her about his ripper days o his bloodlust – or, since I don’t think Katherine talked about her vampiric past, his days with Katherine. Without knowing these things, who the hell is Stefan? And how can tu amor someone tu don’t know?
I’m not saying Katherine respected Damon. TBH, I think that she saw that she could tempt and tease him and he would, naturally, chase after her forever. This, in itself, says that Katherine underestimated how he might grow in character. (…which adds to DK, IMO, but what do I know?) I do’nt think she respected Stefan either, though, and I think that’s apart of 1864!Katherine having her cake and eating it too. They were human, and she didn’t have to choose between them, so she didn’t give a damn. Katherine was selfish then, which doesn’t necessarily mean she never cared for them, just that she put herself first.
But, I digress on 1864.
Today, we get her saying she’s come back for Stefan (Uh huh.) and a very few seduction scenes on the shows part. I’ve pointed this out before, but I’ll point it out again; even for a girl that’s in between Klaus and her freedom, the mostrar has most Katherine-centric scenes with Damon, which doesn’t necessarily mean anything until tu add the fact that she’s supposed to be in amor with Stefan (and in the future, the mostrar might come to mostrar Stefan in amor with her as well) and the mostrar just doesn’t back it up.
With Damon, we’ve seen a very clear resistance on Katherine’s part. She’s not in amor with him. She doesn’t let amor get in the way. She loved them both. Where the writers will take that – for instance, whether they’ll go on to say Katherine loved/loves Damon - is up in the air, of course, but there is somewhat of a pattern that says más about Katherine’s actions, especially if tu start looking at the person she was before.
I know many don’t want to redeem Katherine – redeem being used lightly – but the human Katherine thought amor was what life was worth living for. We’ve seen that Katherine does care, on some level, so I think the idea of her being the eternal villain and being “indifferent” to everyone and everything is kind of a shot long gone.
