Honestly if James was never confirmed as his father, I could see where Snape would be next in line.

Since almost every time he first met someone they told him he looked exactly like James Potter, yes it would've surprised me.
Besides, I think it would have made a lot of the character's behaviour seem very odd. Snape's reactions to him, Dumbledore sending him to the Dursleys instead of to Snape, Lily keeping it a secret, marrying James, keeping Harry from Snape. It just wouldn't fit the story for me.
No offence to anyone who would have liked that or thought it fit, it just would not havfe fit at all for me.

If you read the book you can totally see where it could happen.

I could see it happening up until I read The Prince's Tale and it's like 5th or 6th year and Snape calls Lily the M word saying he dosnt need her help O-o lol I culdnt bring myself to type it pretty sad XD anyway they had that falling out plus like others said everyone says he looks just like James except for Lily's eyes

@ Mermaidtail, these are " What if" questions. So in another reality where Harry's father is unknown until the very end and It was either Lily's Husband or her secret Lover. Just all fun, I wasnt being practical with the story in mind.

I mean before the prequels did anyone really think Vader was Lukes father? I wouldnt know- wasnt around in 1977. Damn it. My Dad said everyone was pretty shocked in the theater but afterwards everyone saw " small" hints that Darth Vader might be Luke's father.

I understand it's a what if question, that's why I mentioned how out of place I think it would have made many of the character's behaviour, regardless of Harry's appearance. Even if Harry had been described as having a big nose and greasy black hair I'd have been surprised because to me it does not fit with the actions and attitudes of many people in Harry's life. The only what if that would make it work for me would have to include 'and what if everyone had done all kinds of things completely differently'. It would take too many what ifs to make it fit for me, it would essentially have to be a completely different story for that plot to have worked for me.

i think they were talking about if james and lily had never married and lily ended up with snape...not oh you look exactly like james but snapes your father. as in james and lily never happened...so i could see where snape couldve been next in line

As others have said, Harry looks too much like his father - though I have seen some fans theorising that this resemblance could have been magically created by Lily to hide an affair. I also think Snape would have realised that Harry could have been his son, and this'd change his attitude towards him slightly. Additionally, Lily and Snape were never romantically involved, and their friendship had ended years before Harry was born, so it'd be a bit of a leap.
