Yeah it was supposed to be a year after each other and the first book came out in 1990 I think so that's just how it all turned out.

i don't now how, but somehow i always knew it was set in the 90's. plus dudley had a playstation 1. if it was present day he'd probably have a xbox or ps2.

book 1 was released on 1997 the reason its set in the 90's cause thats when the idea first came to JK rowling...the book was not published till 97

If she would have had the first book set in 1990 and the last one in the present it wouldnt have followed the timeline. It would have jumped 17 years in a 7 year period (through out the books). I dont think that it mattered that it took place 10 years ago.
