Why isn't young Tom Riddle killed por the Slytherin basilisk?

When Tom Riddle opened the Chamber of Secrets when he was at Hogwarts,he started interacting with the Slytherin basilisk.Since a human is killed por mere eye contact with a basilisk,why isn't Riddle killed?

Tom Riddle was intelligent, so he must have gessed what was in the chamber, and was careful not to look in his eyes. Also, he could commend the basilisk, so he maybe asked it not to look in his eyes.
