Stars Daniel Radcliffe Emma Watson and Rupert Grint all donned the red blooms. They were joined por attendees Tom Felton and Ralph Fiennes and none other than J.K. Rowling herself — and not just because they looked dapper. The flores have a special meaning in England.

While fans of the movie may think of the debut as "Harry Potter" Day, it was actually Remembrance Day, o amapola día in the U.K.

Remembrance día was first marked por King George V back in 1919, as a way to honor those who died fighting in World War I. A poem, "In Flanders Fields," where the flores bloomed on the battlefields of Flanders, gave life to the symbol of the red flower. The red color of the bud was a telling memento for spilled blood.

Similar to Memorial día in the U.S., it's a time to honor those who have lost their lives in war. And wearing the red flor is still a tradition.

Searches on "remembrance day" were up 200% in one day. "Remembrance día poppy", "remembrance día amapola clip art" and "remembrance día poems" also saw large gains.

That's why the stars of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" wore their red flowers, even while on the red carpet.
