If tu haven't been able to figure it out, I'm not cruella. Even though cruella is running this contest and is a judge as well, she can't interview herself. So, since I used to be a co-runner of the last sequel contest we did, we thought I'd interview her for this round. It's no secret that cruella's favorito! fictional character is Scrooge McDuck, so it's no wonder she managed to do such a good job with the character in her entry. So let's find out about her process in how both fun and difficult it was to write her favorito! fictional character.
How does it feel to win this round?
It feels amazing. Like I’ve mentioned before Scrooge isn’t the easiest character to write about, so it’s really nice to know that people like the way I portrayed him well enough to vote for me; especially since all the judges (except me, of course) nominated him as best leading man.
You have dicho many times that Scrooge McDuck is your favorito! fictional character of ALL TIME? Care to explain why?
Oh boy, that hard to explain, but I’ll do my best. It’s probably because he’s such a unique and complex character. I mean he has pretty some harsh flaws, also he’s an older man who’s still in good physical shape, as appose to the usual young protagonist. So often the protagonist is intended to be a perfect role-model and shown with few to no flaws, like Belle. o they begin as anti-heroes and loose their flaws at the end unrealistically, in cases like Dimtri. I have nothing against the standard disney and other animated heroes and heroines but so many of them feel very similar and aren’t relatable. In the pilot episodes of DuckTales, Scrooge was very much an anti-hero who took his nephews in out of obligation rather than love, and only cared for his money. It showed him over time learning to amor his family much más than his money, but still struggling with his flaws o greed, anger and fear of mostrando his emotions. To me that is a much más relatable and realistic role-model then most of the protagonists disney and other companies have today.
What is your favorito! thing about Scrooge and why?
I guess it would be his complexity. I amor how his harsh personally makes him come across as a very grumpy, mean old man, but he’s really a softy with a corazón of gold. I also like how so many of things that he does that make him look like a jerk are actually acts of caring, like giving someone a job rather than money.
What is your least favorito! thing about Scrooge and why?
Well as far as Scrooge’s personality I can’t really think of anything I’d change about him, at least in versions I like. I guess the closest thing to something I dislike about him is when his flaws and used as a cheap laugh and it makes him come across as either greedier than actually he is and/or stupid. An example of this is in the episode Launchpad’s First Crash, where he and Launchpad are trying to escape from a tribe of natives and the plane won’t take off because it’s too heavy with diamonds. So to get some slap-stick comedy in and a joke about what a skin-flint he is, they have Scrooge try to throw Launchpad out of the plane to lighten the load. I understand that this was flashback episode to when they first met and before Scrooge had learned to amor his family, so I can forgive a bit for that, but still is mostrando the hero behaving in that way really worth a cheap laugh? But I’d say moments like that are más bad escritura than anything having to do with his actual personality.
Would tu say it was más fun o difficult to write Scrooge?
That’s another hard pregunta to answer. He’s definitely a mix of both. The más I write about him the más fun he becomes to write about, because I become más accustom to his quirks and personality. At this point I’d say he’s fun to write about, but I still wouldn’t say he’s easy.
You've often dicho that the Don Rosa version of Scrooge was your absolute least favorito! version of the character of ALL TIME! Care to explain why?
That’s mainly because I feel like he’s a very unlikable character, since pretty much all we see of Rosa’s Scrooge is his mean side. Even when he does do something “nice” he always has some hidden motive that benefits him also. Sometimes he’ll even stoop to the level of the villain, like when he trashed Glomgold’s private jet because he so cheap that he rented a junky old plane. And unfortunately any “humor” that he delivers comes from him physically and/or verbally abusing his nephews; such as the time he leaves Donald hanging on vine and doesn’t bother recusing him but saves that treasure map he was holding. I know that I dicho that DuckTales Scrooge did something similar to Launchpad, but that was a very rare out of character moment for him, as oppose to being the norm for Rosa’s Scrooge. I understand that Scrooge is a flawed character, but there’s flawed and then there’s bordering on villainy you’re so flawed.
I did a video a while hace explaining in detail why I hate him. Here a link in anybody’s interested.

Besides the Don Rosa version of Scrooge, what is your least favorito! version of Scrooge?
That would probably be the House of ratón version. I just feel like he’s an insult to the Mickey and friends version of Scrooge. I mean, not only did they make him only care about money but they made him so stupid. Nobody in their right mind would think that doing things like sitting all the guests at one mesa, tabla to save money is a good business practice. How did this guy get to be The Richest pato in the World if he’s that bad with business?! He’s the one thing in House of ratón that kept me from loving the show, but I do like it.
On a más positive note, what is your favorito! version of Scrooge, besides the Ducktales version?
That would definitely be the standard Mickey and friends version. I adore him pretty equally to the DuckTales one, since they’re pretty much the same character. I’ve heard some people argue that the Mickey and friends version is even softer and más kind-hearted than the DuckTales one, because that franchise is aimed at very young audience. I personally don’t agree with that, I always gotten the impression that those two versions have nearly identical personalities; they’re just shown in different situations. DuckTales would always feature stories about action and adventure, as opposed the Mickey and friends stories that are más friendship based, so he has más opportunities to mostrar his soft side. So one the main reasons I amor Mickey and Friends’ Scrooge is it’s nice seeing him outside the usual treasure hunting plot.
Which relationship was más fun to write about, Scrooge and Webby o Scrooge and Minnie?
Well, I adore both relationships equally, which makes sense since they’re both between my favorito! and a segundo favorito! fictional character. If I had to choose which I enjoyed escritura more, it would be Scrooge and Minnie. Both are unique relationships that are very underrated and not shown nearly enough. However Scrooge and Minnie’s relationship is extremely unusual, being a non-romanic, friendship between a man and woman, who are of different ages and social classes; but sadly it’s mostrar cased even even less than his with Webby. I’ve only seen it shown a few times in Mickey ratón holiday specials, kids books, and comics. So part of the fun of it is that since it isn’t very well established I can put más of my own spin on a very unique relationship, and at the same time hopefully remind disney that they’re missing out on a great opportunity por ignoring it.
What was the hardest part about escritura Scrooge, since he's such a complex character?
Maintaining that perfect balance between “loving uncle” and “grumpy old man”. That means knowing when it’s appropriate to crack a joke about his cheapness, and when it’s good to have him mostrar his sensitive side. Because if tu get even a little off with one of those it makes him look either greedy to the point of only caring about money o too emotional, which is out of character for him.
What was the easiest part about escritura Scrooge?
I wouldn’t say that there’s really anything easy about escritura him, but I guess the least difficult part would be his humor as he’s naturally a pretty funny character. Of course even then tu need to be careful that the jokes about his greed o anger don’t make him come across as an unlikable jerk.
Which of your versions of Scrooge did tu enjoy escritura about more, True Treasure o Pageant Pandemonium?
I definitely enjoyed escritura him más in True Treasure, likely because I was más familiar with his character, and quirks, making him at least a little easier to write.
How excited are tu about the new reboot of Ducktales?
I’m very excited about it! I can’t wait for Scrooge, Webby and Launchpad to all be in the spotlight again. But I have to admit I’m a little nervous too.
If tu could've voted for yourself, would you? (Be honest)
People are probably going to hate me, but, yes. I mean he is my favorito! fictional character, after all.
Do tu think tu deserved to win this round? (Be honest)
Yes, I do. But there were others that also did.
