Rumour: Christmas Won’t Be Jenna Coleman’s Last
Round and round we go! The Mirror, the paper that started the whole rumour about Jenna Coleman leaving Doctor Who in the first place, are now claiming she won’t be after all. They cite an ‘insider’ who says she’s had “a change of heart”.
Jenna Coleman will not be saying Ta-tardis to Doctor Who as expected this Christmas.
The 28-year-old actress’s decision to remain as the Time Lord’s glamorous assistant Clara Oswald in another series will delight millions of fans.
Jenna had originally planned to bow out in the upcoming BBC1 festive special, and it was reported in August that the Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, would soon be in need of a new sidekick.
But since then she has changed her mind about departing and asked to remain for the first half of the new season, to be broadcast next autumn.
Her decision to linger has thrilled bosses, including Steven Moffat, who believe she has great chemistry with Capaldi, 56.
But it has meant scrapping the first set of new scripts. One show source revealed: “When it came to Clara, they had to tear them up and start again.
“In the original draft of the script, she became an old woman who then died with the Doctor at her side. But after they were rewritten, she will now be seen returning to the Tardis, hand in hand with the Doctor.”
The rest of the special, teasingly entitled Last Christmas, sees the Doctor and Clara unable to fully determine between a fantasy world and reality.
They are helped along by Nick Frost as Santa, who comes to the pair’s aid and is the hero of the hour.
The insider added that Jenna had had a “change of heart” about leaving, having done just one series with Capaldi.
The pair, who have drawn widespread acclaim for their partnership, also bonded during the World Tour to promote series eight, for which they visited seven cities across five continents in 12 days.
UPDATE: a BBC spokesperson told RadioTimes: “This is speculation so we won’t be commenting. Viewers will have to watch the Christmas episode to find out!”
Moffat Can\'t Confirm Jenna Coleman for Series 9

I hope Jenna is staying. Two years after AOTD, I\'m still crazy about her. It\'s exhausting and sometimes makes me feel rather unhappy for a variety of reasons (such as the age difference, the fact that she has a boyfriend and the fact that I\'ve never met her) but she\'s got this hold over me that no other woman has ever had (not counting Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars or Elsa from Frozen since they\'re not real people). Even if Jenna does leave halfway through, I\'d still be glad that she at least decided to stay for what would essentially be two full series plus THREE Christmas specials.
DWTV will no doubt update this, but just in case, the BBC has said that "Viewers will have to watch the Christmas episode to find out!" (how very enlightening! :-P) also, to quote the Radio Times:
“I’ve just been keeping my mouth firmly shut,” the 28-year-old told RadioTimes.com earlier this month.
"You get good at keeping secrets – this one in particular is quite difficult because you don’t want to be evasive, and you want to answer questions, but at the same time I just look back at different points of the show, where we had things like Oswin [her first appearance] in Asylum of the Daleks, when people didn’t know, and it was just better."
She added: “The show is better for the surprises. So that’s why we’re being very evasive. Very coy."
However, she did admit that reports of her departure “could be misinformation”, which head writer Steven Moffat for storylines in the past.
Man, I\'m getting a headache trying to process all of this!
"One show source" is usually code for "news is slow today, so let\'s make something up" in tabloid talk. I believe nothing until I hear it direct from one of the DW higher ups
I was saving this Icon for a bit later, but what with the recent rumours it felt appropriate!
I\'m not a huge fan of the idea that Clara could be leaving mid-series personally. I hope that if she is continuing, it\'ll be for Series 9 in it\'s entirety. Without any sort of break (like there was with the Ponds at least), I think it\'d be rather weird if she just went halfway through the run!
I really like what they did with Clara, and her acting was great in S 8, but I think it\'s time to move on.  I would like a fresh break and a clean start in series 9.  Unleash the PC Doctor with new companions ... I feel that we desperately need something different in that regard ...
I would quite like Clara to go, reboot the series. As much as I enjoyed Series 8, I want very different things from Series 9...
Are speculations but the idea of seeing Clara die of old age, my God, I could not just stand it! And I think even the Doctor could face a similar moment. I have always hoped that Clara would remain for another season because I love to see her relate to the Doctor but at the same time I don\'t want that writers must necessarily adapt the story because of her desire to stay, although relying on speculation Moffat was happy with her decision. In short, if she stays I will be immensely happy but has to remain in the plot, there must be a reason. Clara doesn\'t have to be just a marginal element.
The idea of the Doctor visiting Clara from time to time until she eventually dies of old age seems like a rather nice idea to me. It\'s a bit different to former companion exits, yes, the Ponds also died of old age but it would be much more dramatic to actually seeage take its toll on Clara... well, as long as the prosthetics are alright...which they don\'t end to be! We always hear about how the Doctor can never get too close to his companions because they age and die whereas he just regenerates, but we\'ve never actually seen this hypothesis in action.
I\'d be happy enough to have Clra for another year, although if the rumours are true, I hope that she doesn\'t feel shoehorned in.
dont mind that much if she stays or leaves    - the problem will be if she leaves halfway through a series- a companion needs a whole series to shine which is why clara\'s first series has split opinion.....
On the one hand I\'m happy because I love the Clara/12 dynamic but on the other I\'m kinda mourning that (possibly completely fabricated) storyline if her growing old bc , knowing Moffat, that would\'ve been a beautiful send off... Also a companion leaving half way through just doesn\'t sit well. The send off will inevitably be rushed. Though adding credibility to the report, the info on this year Xmas special sounds actually quite logical...
Maybe Jenna Coleman is staying for series 9 but I don\'t quite believe she would of changed her mind at the last minute. I think she would of always been in series 9 but because the Daily Mirror made up that story several months back that she was going to leave. They are now trying to make that story look believable. IMO though I don\'t think she will leave at Christmas.
I don\'t really care much either way. I like Clara, especially with all the character development she\'s received lately, but I don\'t feel the same connection with her that I had with the Ponds. I\'m happy for her to stick around, but I won\'t be that heartbroken if she leaves either.
Please, just for once let the tabloids be right.  Lovely, gorgeous, fantastic, talented, beautiful Jenna cannot possibly leave us yet!!
I wouldn\'t mind Clara dying to a Dalek to enrage the 12th Doctor, it could make the Dalek\'s more scary while finishing Clara\'s story
Journey Blue would make a great companion. But I love Clara
One more Christmas for the record Jenna... one more Christmas. Then leave to create yet another argument over who lasted the longest.
Chief Editor of Mirror:*grumbling* Look here, we\'re lacking in articles for the Entertainment section.
Chief Editor:I was going to issue an article on Prince Harry going stark naked inside a bar but I had a better idea. *pulls employee close and whispers* Remember last year\'s Doctor Who Christmas Special? How we leaked the details on it?
Employee:...uh, I had to hide seven hours in a Dalek costume to get those details, right?
Chief Editor:That\'s not the point, the point is that we got our facts right for once and everybody admitted that we could be credible sometimes. Now, here\'s what I want you to do. Have you noticed that Jenna Coleman is getting secretive on interviews recently?
Chief Editor:Shush. Now, go write an article on how Jenna Coleman will leave our screens during this year\'s Christmas Special. Try to work in devastating tidbits if you can.
Employee:..sir, I went out with my friend from the BBC yesterday...
Employee:Uh...she says that Jenna Coleman isn\'t leaving...
but my friend said that she and the Doctor left on a good note with her adding that she might go on for a trip every now and then. Kind of like Martha from the David Tennant years, though in a different situ-
Chief Editor:Quiet! *puts head in hands* How will we ever cover this up?
Employee:...maybe we can say that she had a change of heart and the scripts were changed at the last minute? Though that would defy logic...
Chief Editor:Brilliant! A worthy plan! Could you go and write that article? I\'ll raise your pay!
Employee:...uh, sure, boss. I\'ll make sure to add stupid puns, sappy romantic subtext, and false references to the rest of the cast.
I other words: "We didn\'t have a story last time, we don\'t have it now, but we\'ve managed to produce two headlines."
Also, wouldn\'t these rewrites have had to been done ages ago, before the shooting of the episode? Somehow I don\'t think, if the source is really an insider, that it would\'ve stayed a secret for this long. Seems to me the Mirror is just covering their ground...
Even if Clara exits the show after the Christmas Special (for whatever reason), I think we can be sure of seeing her when Capaldi\'s Doctor eventually regenerates.
1. Nine regenerated in front of Rose in "The Parting of the Ways".
3. Eleven had a hallucination of young Amelia as well as the grown-up Amy Pond in "The Time of the Doctor", as he started to regenerate.
Going by this logic, I won\'t be surprised if Twelve sees Clara one final time before his regeneration.
that is a brilliant rumour! I really hope they are true, we need another series with the doctor and clara! :DD
"She became an old woman who then died with the Doctor at her side"
I don\'t know about you guys but I really, really hope that doesn\'t happen! Amy and Rory lived a long life to death and grew old, he aged Matt\'s Doctor like a million years and aged the War Doctor so much he regenerated of old age. If Moff\'s gonna kill a companion, I\'d rather it be her being killed, as grim as it sounds! I\'m not convinced she\'s staying though, I still think that there\'s every chance she\'s off. We\'ll just have to find out at Christmas I suppose!
The Mirror... Ha. As reliable as a scribble on the back of a public toilet door.. Must say I am looking forward to Coleman moving on though. A new Companion, new Screwdriver, new Tardis and more of a focus on the Doctor again is what I\'m looking for. I can\'t get enough of Capaldi on screen is what it really all boils down to... Although there are plenty who don\'t want Coleman to go and that\'s ok too!
I dont think Clara dying of old age would be lousy:
- Clara was dying all over the doctor\'s timeline to save him so the original deserves something different
- it would remind us of "Time of the doctor" - just in different roles
I am sure Steven Moffat could make a heartbreaking end out of this stuff!
The Daily Fail are reporting it too, not that that adds any credibility to the overall claim.
I hope she does stay I like Clara she has spirit I don\'t think she has to die when she does go maybe she will find an alternate Danny
Good Morning Britain has just reported that Jenna will remain as Clara "for another series".
However, she did admit that reports of her departure “could be misinformation”, which head writer Steven Moffat
@The Lazy Cat is Hanging Out With Jenna Coleman Forget the headaches, I am having a heartache.
@The Lazy Cat is Hanging Out With Jenna Coleman Same here! And I also hope that they add another companion to the mix as well. Maybe they could join about mid-way through the series...
@JFrance I totally agree. They are covering themselves!
@Clara Prefect Well done! I can see (and hear) something close to this actually happening!
Covering something else more like it. Usually covered by the seat of the pants.
Not to mention the fact that it sounds like it came out of a soap opera rather than a well-respected Science Fiction show...
I think it\'s quite a nice idea if you think about It I mean she was there for 11 when he died of old age and now he\'d be there for her when she does of old age
@supermoff, agent of C.L.A.R.A. Surely that actually detracts credibility...
@Mikeyboss182 They reported that Matt Smith was leaving when there was no solid evidence once. Not a reliable source.
@DocWhoFan @The Lazy Cat is Hanging Out With Jenna Coleman That goes without saying! This is toying with our poor emotions!
@TheCyberDoctor @The Lazy Cat is Hanging Out With Jenna Coleman That would be great! I\'d rather that than an awkward mid-series transition. As long as everyone gets enough focus!
@mrclever is waiting to be approved @divya12 Awwww. I miss Handles!
@The Lazy Cat is Hanging Out With Jenna Coleman @TheCyberDoctor It just doesn\'t make much sense for her to leave in the middle, especially with the series being a continuous run. :D
That\'s like saying the leaves will fall off the trees in autumn...they all leave eventually. ;)
@TheCyberDoctor @The Lazy Cat is Hanging Out With Jenna Coleman  I also think that it would be a big disservice to her and her successor, I can\'t see that happening.
@The Lazy Cat is Hanging Out With Jenna Coleman @TheCyberDoctor Me neither
