I realise this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I’m still curious to see if anyone else is with me on this. There’s only a handful of Disney live action films I’ve enjoyed, but they aren’t all from the same era. I’m generally more for the animated movies. For me, the same goes with Disney Channel shows. Even though there are some DC live action shows I can watch and appreciate, I still tend to go for the animated ones far more often. However, while I’ve known plenty of Disney fans to agree with me when it comes to preferring their animation over live action, the majority then say that their live action work simply isn’t “as good as it used to be”. Looking back at the old live action films, I can’t figure out what they see in them that’s apparently superior to what they’re doing now. On the flip side, I don’t see any improvement nowadays either (in terms of acting and directing – obviously there’s been some development in special effects). I’m fine with people liking and disliking whichever films and TV shows they want, but the more I’ve heard people defend the older live action stuff with the single comment “it’s a classic” has made me question how legitimate my own opinions are. I don’t want to be one of those people who likes something simply because it is older (or newer, for that matter!) and sometimes I wonder whether the popularity of Disney’s live action movies and shows would be completely different if every one of them had been released on the same year.
