As asteriamalfoy recently reported on the club wall, it appears that Moana will soon become the newest member of the disney Princess lineup. The club's reception to the news is a mixed bag, which is the latest example of how the general fanpop opinion (namely, this club's opinion) doesn't always match that of the internet. It's interesting why that is, and I will attempt to find the reason here.

Before going forward, be aware that everything that I consider an "opinion" of fanpop and/or the internet is a generalization. True, there are some users on both this website and the rest of the worldwide web who are in their respective minorities. This is merely a breakdown of how I see it and my attempt to get to the root of the issue -- why is Moana beloved in some places, but not in others? Time to find out.

The Difference of Opinion
I find that on Youtube, Disney-related sites (such as "Oh My Disney"), and other sites (Buzzfeed and the like), Moana is a well-liked character. The common reasons people like her from what I've seen are:

• She's responsible; even though she wants to explore the ocean, she does what's right and chooses to lead her people. And she enjoys it, too!
• She's self-reliant; she doesn't need to be constantly saved, and she can save the día pretty much on her own.
• On a related note, she "doesn't need a man."
• On a separate related note, she's quick-thinking and resourceful, o what some people call "badass."
• She doesn't have the traditional look of a disney Princess, i.e. no formal vestido and different body type. This gives her a new and perhaps más realistic look.
• She renounces the princess name.

Then tu check out the DP club on Fanpop, and tu find that generally, Moana is not particularly loved, for reasons including:

• She has little to no flaws.
• She doesn't have much of a personality.
• She's just a mish-mash of the princesses who came before her -- nothing new.
• She renounces the princess name.

That's quite a contrast in opinion, and maybe a little surprising that a place dedicated to the DPs generally doesn't take too kindly to her. I think I've discovered why this contrast exists, though.

The fuente of the Difference
Perhaps this contrast is because people that tu find elsewhere on the internet have a different set of character traits/qualities that they value than the ones on this club. From what I understand, the general internet crowd values disney Princesses and heroines who:

• Add something new to the lineup
• Are strong and can work independently
• Are determined and don't give up
• Are admirable

On this club, I think we have a different set of values for DPs. We like those who:

• Add something new to the lineup
• Are realistic and/or relatable
• Stand for something positive regarding princess-hood, femininity, etc. without feeling forced o too "in your face"
• Respect the DP franchise

Regarding the first bullet point -- I believe both sides like it when a princess/heroine adds something to the lineup, but it is seen in different ways. The internet seems to like how Moana invokes new positive qualities such as the desire and willingness to lead, which, let's be honest, hasn't been done with a DP before, at least not explicitly. I theorize that users on this club, including myself, consider all of the positive qualities of the character and how those stack up against the existing DPs, not just the new ones. For example, action-packed (Rapunzel), self-doubt (Pocahontas, Mulan), determined (Ariel), outspoken (Merida), and funny (Rapunzel, Anna) are all traits that we've seen in other princesses and heroines. The number of familiar traits can make the actual new traits seem like not enough.

However, I think the above argument is only a tiny part of why the fanpop opinion is más critical. The remaining bullet points are key. As stated, Moana does mostrar a desire and willingness to lead her people, which would fit the desired element of saying something positive about princess-hood (er, leader-hood, o how about just leadership). Is it in your face? I'm going to lean towards "no," but -- now I'm going to bring my own opinion into the mix -- it's one of the reasons I have difficulty latching onto her character. Despite Moana having this very positive quality going for her, she doesn't feel realistic to me. Her turn-around from wanting to sail the seas to being perfectly content staying and leading is just too sudden. With few flaws to balance it out, she comes across as a little too perfect to me. Perhaps this lack of realism and relatability is what others dislike, too.

It's often dicho that a strong character is one who works through their flaws; ergo, a strong female character is one who works through her flaws. Moana might have flaws, but maybe they don't get the focus they need to make us think, "Oh yeah, she overcame that flaw, achieved her goals, and learned something from this adventure." If that's the case, then the positive femininity thing doesn't really work. It's almost too positive, o impossibly positive. We need something más convincing if the takeaway is that a girl/lady/woman can achieve great things.

The biggest issue that Fanpoppers have with Moana comes from this line: "First off, I'm not a princess. I'm the daughter of the chief." This statement has not been well-received because for some, it implies that Moana is disrespecting the disney Princess name. I shared that opinion too at one point. It may just be disney poking fun at itself, but it can rub fans the wrong way. If this character who seemingly fits the DP mold can't appreciate the leading ladies who came before her...well, how the heck are we supposed to like her? Contrast this with the general internet's opinion, where people take it to mean that Moana doesn't have to be bogged down por the título of princess; one can be a strong character without having a royal título o other high status. Or, maybe people like it because it detaches her from the princess stereotype that they can't stand.

The más I think about it, the más I think that line is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it can be perceived as, "Oh yeah, tu don't need to be a princess to save the día o to be someone important o worthwhile." On the other hand, one can perceive it as Moana being better than a princess, which can be taken as "Oh, tu think you're better than the disney Princesses, is that right?" o "Yeah, the princess título is just that -- a title. Not all heroines have to be princesses." Well, maybe there's a better message here. Instead of having your character say they're not a princess, why not embrace their princess-ness (or the equivalent -- daughter of a chief would be an equivalent), and then mostrar us that dicho character is a good, strong character? You'd be broadening your own definition of princesses to mean any good-natured, strong-willed female, which is exactly what the DP franchise is trying to do now with their reciente videos and slogan. Then, all of the princesses can be seen in a new and positive light.

Conclusions
Not to be too redundant, but I do believe that Moana's reception here versus on the rest of the internet boils down to what people want and like to see in disney heroines, as well as how they interpret certain aspects of the character (or lines of dialogue, as discussed above). I think this is also the reason why fans can have such opposing vistas on other characters, like Ariel o Elsa. It can also be why some characters are sometimes seen favorably here, like the early princesses, but not much elsewhere. It all has to do with the specific set of traits we value. Moana's prospective introduction to the lineup brought this...for lack of a better term, "issue," to the spotlight, for me at least. Perhaps discussions like these will change some perceptions of characters for the better, even if just slightly, if people recognize the exact qualities that are being valued por other fans.
There are lots of synonyms for selfishness. Try any dictionary online, o a hard copy (remember those?), and tu can see that these words share exactly the same meaning, if only stated in slightly different ways:

Moving on with the series it's time to shed some amor on my third favorito! princess, Jasmine. From what I've seen, jazmín doesn't get nearly the amor she deserves on here, so I hope I can give her at least a little bit of what she deserves. I apologize if this articulo isn't as long o well thought out as the first two, it doesn't mean I amor jazmín any less, just that I'm not feeling as wordy as usual. Anyway, I hope tu enjoy the articulo and thanks for checking it out! =)

We're introduced to jazmín with a bit of a bang. I amor how she stands her ground against her father and stands...

I'm not the best at describing looks, but I did it anyway. Here's my prettiest DP list!

13. Jasmine
There’s nothing really bad about her looks in particular, but she just has features that I don’t really find appealing. Her nose seems just a little bit too big for her face and while it does fit naturally I don’t like how it looks siguiente to her other features. Though her eyebrows are thick, I actually don’t mind them they do bring character to her and they aren’t really that big and since she has thick hair it would make sense. What really turns me off from Jasmine’s look is her eyes,...

1 = Ariel

Ariel's my prettiest. I know a lot of people would be totally against this opinion, because her hair doesn't look "natural," o her body's "too thin;" but I absolutely amor the way she looks. Her hair is thick and flows nicely, which I amor A LOT, her eyes are a beautiful blue, and her skin seems to be a nice light tan/pale color. To me, she's absolutely beautiful.

Many people would call her "plain" and "just cute," but I find that she's really a beautiful person, and her looks add a lot on. I really do like her hair, long o not,...

I'm not at all confident in this list, but either way I amor talking about the princesses and thought this articulo was long overdue (Well I've only been here..what? Two weeks? Eh, it still feels long overdue to me). ^^ Beforehand I'd like to say that I amor all the princesses, even my least favorite. As a group the princesses mean so much to me and as individuals I amor them all to pieces, so don't feel bad if your favorito! is low! The lista is also divided into three sections because within those sections I'm really not sure how the princesses rate, but I know they're somewhere around that...

Since I did an articulo about my favorito! Princesses I thought what the heck! why not do an articulo about the Prince's after what is a Princess without her except Merida and Elsa of course :)

11- Prince
While this prince is sweet and kind like his princess having only one corazón and one both for her sadly we don't get to see much of him and therefore it's somewhat hard
to depict much of his personality.

10- Prince Charming
Like the Prince I'm afraid for me falls into the same barco unless even with the sequels I find it hard to depict his personality except that he is very determined and daring...

Hello all, this articulo is pretty much what the título says. I have had some boring time lately and I just started listing some of my thoughts on paper, and then I got the evil idea to write articulo about it. So this is all about my opinions and thoughts and tu all freely may o may not agree with them. I actually have very little theories here, and most of them are completely lunatic, but let's hope tu get at least some amuse from them. I have listed my opinions very bluntly without any greater explanations because I wanted this to be short and clear(and I don't like to write a lot).

i have to say it always bother me the fact than he didn't went to find her himself , it would had been easer for the duke as he knows how the girl looks.
i also sometimes doubt that he would pick her if he had seen her in her maid costume.

Bonjour!

So there are lots of beautiful women in disney - however only the Princesses seem to be recognised for it. Today I've decided to acknowledge some of the other disney Heroines who are stunning, but who rarely get the recognition. They deserve it!
(No particular order, btw).

Slew Foot Sue
Melody Time

I'm not sure if many of tu have seen Melody Time - it's a little bit like Fantasia por putting música to stories. But there's a girl in the story of "Pecos Bill" (who happens to be Bill's amor interest) who is actually quite pretty. Red hair; a colour that represents that of Ariel contrasts...

I'd really amor to make an articulo on my favorito! disney Princesses, but my lista still isn't final and I've still got some things here and there to sort out, so I opted out for a prettiest princess lista instead. I find all of the princesses to be gorgeous beforehand, though some I just find a little prettier than others! ^^ Anyway, I hope tu enjoy this article!

13. Belle

Possibly a bit of an unpopular opinion, but Belle is without a doubt my least prettiest princess. Even not considering her inconsistent animación she still doesn't seem to be much of anything special to me. She's got a unique...

There was a very popular articulo made a long time hace about the origins of disney princesses names and I wanted to do something with the names of disney princes. These names will be done in a misceláneo order and some princes will be left out for various reasons (such as SOMEBODY not even having a name).

1. Adam
Adam is the Hebrew term for man. I think this is pretty obvious because according to the Bible, Adam was the first man created. In a way it is fitting that the Beast is called Adam once he is transformed back as he is human again and now a man not a beast.

Another name meaning is red. This...

Similar to my disney Princess list, this lista has changed a lot, so I thought I would remake it. Anyways, please keep in mind that this is my opinion, and we may disagree, so respect my opinion and I will respect yours. I hope tu enjoy the article!

12. Mulan.
Oh, another mulan rant, this should be a joy. Anyways, first I want to say, that all the people I told Beauty and the Beast would be my last forever, it looks like I lied about that. mulan is now my least favorite. Anyways, what I...

Anyways, please keep in mind that this is my opinion, and we may disagreement so respect my opinion and I will respect yours. I hope tu enjoy the article! :)

And I really want to know what tu think about my list, so if tu could comment, it would mean a lot!
