The thing I really enjoyed about this one was how it explored so many of the characters personalities, backgrounds, and relationships much more than the animated movie did. It's as though the writers looked over the original, took note of anything left open-ended or to the imagination, and decided to create a fully-fledged explanation of those things. It must have been really fun to work on. That sort of thing adds something to the experience. I mean, the 1991 version was animated beautifully and the narrative was fine as it was, so when they first announced a live action version I thought to myself, "well, it might have some cool CG effects with all the enchanted objects and whatnot, but really what's the point?" After watching it and learning so much more about the characters, I realised, "oh, so that's the point!" They didn't just remake it, they made it their own and added new things to it.
The character that really impressed me (in terms of writing) was Maurice, who was an excellent multi-layered character in this version. I also liked that Belle displayed various types of intelligence in this one (it's something that assumed about her in the animated one, rather than really confirmed). I liked the part where she was helping Maurice with his work at the beginning, and it was a nice touch having her teach a child how to read too, showing that she has the ability to educate and transfer knowledge too. I also thought it was interesting the way that she had to trick her father into taking his place in being the Beast's prisoner. Not only do we get to see Belle thinking on her feet, but it shows Maurice to be a strong-willed and caring character too (not the fact that he was tricked, but the fact that he was absolutely unwilling to let his daughter give up her life for him).
I also loved LeFou, who was my favourite in the animated movie anyway, but I thought he was amazing in this version too. He got a decent amount of screentime, actually, so that was a big plus for me. :)
Anyway, yeah, really loved it! It was two days ago since I saw it and I've been thinking about it a lot since then. I keep thinking of different things to compare between the two movies, things to compare between the new movie and the stage production, all kinds of things really. It was great and I'm really happy with the result.
