The very same here for me. At that time, just like u, I too didn't realize that Speed Racer was one of the early and retro anime series

Now I want to say growing up at that time I did not realize that Voltron was an anime as well but that would make plenty of sense too. After all dado the rather distinctive retro-style animación of that series Voltron would definitely be a retro, old-school anime series
